Vanessa Ferrari is well-known for her immense endurance, and she will need all her stoicism to perform at the Beijing Olympics.

The 17-year-old, the first Italian to win the world all-around title in 2006, is struggling to recover from tendinitis in her right foot.

"She's training in pain, she's living in pain," her manager Giacomo Chieffi said.

Still, Ferrari does not hesitate to "step on the gas", as her coach demands, when the going gets tough.

A gymnast since she was seven, Ferrari knows she has to take risks if she is to succeed.

At the 2006 Worlds in Denmark, a thrilling performance on the floor put her on top of the podium, after a fall from the balance beam seemed to have dashed her chances of victory.

Officials explained that the new cumulative scoring system rewarded those who push the envelope in their routines.

A few months later at the European Championships, Ferrari took the all-round title and a second gold in the floor exercise.

However, Ferrari relinquished her world crown to American Shawn Johnson in Stuttgart last year, as a fall relegated her to third place.

Medical examinations showed she had performed with a fracture in her left foot.

Twisting and turning on the apparatus for more than 30 hours a week, Ferrari does not indulge in the normal distractions of girls her age.

"Love? Not now. Now there's gymnastics," the soft-spoken gymnast said in an interview in April.
